Matteo Goffriller (1659-1742) cellos are high-quality cellos made in Italy named after the Venetian violin maker M. Goffriller. He was one of the most important makers of string instruments in Venice and is the founder of the Venetian school.
Original Goffriller cellos are very rare and rank among themost expensive historical instruments. Auction examples show cellos selling for hundreds of thousand to millions of euros, depending on their condition, provenance and history.
The instruments often have a deep reddish-brown varnish and a characteristic small scrol, typical of the Venetian style.
